Exalted Ruler's Message

A funny thing happened at the lodge last night.

Not long ago in Austin, at a lodge on top of the hill, I attended a meeting of past exalted ones. Upon my arrival, I was summoned to conference with the appointed one, the ruler from a lodge south of our castle. He greeted me with somber news. It seemed that our own exalted one had chosen to resign his position as leader of our castle on the hill. "Could it be so?" was my reply. First, the exalted one was banished from the kingdom not to return for three years. The second exalted one had chosen to leave his castle on the hill and now the third. Could it be true? As it seems, true it is. Gone by his own hand, the letter was read. So many changes in such a short period.

It was then that I discovered why I had been summoned; the question was put to me. Would I, if nominated, run for position of the exalted one? And, if so elected, would I serve as our current leader? Wow! I did not see that coming. Even with the current state of our kingdom, with the knights of the chairs in such a flux, I chose to accept the said position. If so elected, I would serve as the exalted one of our castle on the hill. I accepted in hopes that the kingdom could return to its prior glory.

But there were problems in the other kingdom, my own little kingdom. The soon to be exalted one had accepted such high position without telling the Queen of the little kingdom.

How to tell my wife? I'm going to have to drink on this one. Oh, I meant to say think on this one. Yes! I've got it! I won't tell her. "Great idea!" I said, nodding my head in acknowledgement. I immediately began shaking my head the other way and saying "no" out loud. That will only work for about one day. I need longer.

Then it came to me. Misdirection would rule the day. I would spin a tale of mistreatment to the Queen's mother, and tell her that neither the Queen nor I had taken the mother out to eat in such a time that we should be ashamed. What a bad son-in-law and daughter. And while the queen was in deep thought, pondering such possibilities, I would drop in that "Oh, by the way, I'm going to be the ER for the rest of the year." Yes, spirits were high. What a great idea!

All would be good in the kingdoms once again, and sleeping on the couch is not all that bad.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
